This was especially applicable to their gods. The depictions, characters and stories of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades were very similar to one another. This could be due to artistic conventions, the fact that the brothers were close or the diverse stories that were told in different regions.
The first of the Olympians to take on their father Cronus was Zeus. Cronus was scared that one of Zeus' siblings would overthrow Cronus, swallowed Zeus and his brothers upon birth. His wife Rhea was able to sneak out of the womb and save her son, and Zeus was the only child of Cronus to live.
When the Titans were defeated, Zeus and his brothers split their power among them. Zeus took the skies and his brother Poseidon was given the throne over the seas.
Hades was the most vile of his brothers and sisters and became ruler of the underworld. Hades is often seen as a ghastly, ominous character that evokes terror and fear in those who come in contact with him. Cerberus is often depicted with him, the three-headed canine who guards his territory. He wears the Helm of Darkness and wields the bident (which is similar to Poseidon's tridents).
The ancient Greeks believed that the underworld was more of a spiritual realm rather than a hell-like place. Hades was charged with watching over the souls of mortals and women who died and ensuring that divine justice was done for their lives. He also has the responsibility of creating life and bring rain to those who require it.

Persephone was reluctant to leave her earthly life and return to the realm of her father. She eventually complied with the terms. This is the reason it was one of the few times that Hades traveled above ground.
